UMF Tutoring

November is a time where students are starting to get stressed with workload, studying, and overall making sure that they are getting their grades up for the final push. There are a lot of great options for college students to help them get through this month, but tutoring may possibly be the best option.
UMF offers tutoring to students in any subject, through a small fee into their student account. There are many kinds of tutoring opportunities for students. They can go to the Student Learning Commons (in the back of the library) during sit-in hours for writing and math help, they can go to an SI Tutor who may sit in on their difficult classes, or they can go onto Navigate and schedule an appointment with a tutor for any class that they need help with. If students have issues with creating an appointment on Navigate, they can always email Misty Beck the Learning Commons..
“There are a lot of benefits of getting tutoring. Many people see it as only if you're failing but most people are doing fairly well in class and just want some extra feedback.”
The average GPA of students who have a tutor is a 3.2. This means that those students who go to tutoring aren't already failing class, but they are going to get extra help or advice. Some students think that they can or should only get tutoring when they are struggling, but that is not true.
One reason for getting a tutor is just to gain confidence in the class. Some students may know things but need to be refreshed outside of class and have one or two questions. Students can go there for that as well. Tutors are there to help students feel better and soak up knowledge in any way possible.
Another reason to get a tutor is if a student needs help with studying techniques or needs help studying for one specific exam. If they need help with studying for one individual exam they can schedule just one tutoring session.
Students are getting help from other students who have already gained the knowledge, understand the professor’s teaching styles on the subject, and know how to talk to students in ways that help the individual understand. Utilizing tutoring allows students to talk to their peers and that creates a comfortable environment for students to learn and thrive in.
