Typically at the beginning of every semester, freshmen and new transfer students at the University of Maine at Farmington have struggled to get out of their comfort zone, not knowing where to go or what to do. Events at the Landing have changed that. People working at the Landing have organized big events to draw new students in.
"There have been large turnouts and students have been getting out of their rooms more," Landing Manager Jacob Piechowski said.
The people who run the Landing have been expanding the turnout by putting on more popular events at the beginning of the semester. Multiple events have been put on such as “Stuff It Night" on Aug. 28 where residents could stuff various stuffed animals and be able to take them home with them. This was a large turnout with most of the stuffed animals being gone by the time one would go to receive one. The line was very long as everyone had to cram into the space.
Another event on Aug. 31 was called "Bingo Night" where multiple prizes were on the line for people to take with them. This also gained a large audience with every seat in the Landing being filled. The bingo prizes included expensive headphones, gift cards and giant stuffed animals.
"Lego Night" was a large turnout as different people built different things of all shapes and sizes with legos. All of the designs built were placed on a table in the front of the room so everyone else could see the works created.
People working at the Landing plan to continue getting freshmen out of their dorms by holding big events all throughout the semester. Ultimately, Piechowski hopes to get everyone out of their rooms at least once as we all go through the semester.
